Two police officials were today suspended in connection with the hooch tragedy in Vaishali district which has claimed four lives, a top police officer said here.

"The SHOs of Rajapakar and Barachi Sahayak police stations, Changu Ram and Shahbaz Khan respectively, have been suspended for laxity and dereliction of duty", IGP of Tirhut zone Sunil Kumar told reporters here.

The IGP, who toured Vasauli village where people had consumed spurious liquor two days ago, said "a few villagers including village chowkidar were involved in the illicit liquor trade".

Four people have died so far after consuming spurious liquor while another is still undergoing treatment at a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

The village chowkidar, whose brother was arrested for involvement in the illicit liquor business in the village, has been removed, Superintendent of Police of Vaishali, Rakesh Kumar had said earlier in the day.

The SP had also sent 11 policemen, including the now suspended SHO Shahbaz Khan, to Police Lines for laxity and dereliction of duty.

Sale and consumption of liquor was banned in Bihar by the Nitish Kumar government since April last year.
