The ashes of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were immersed in the Ganga river at Varanasi today as thousands converged to pay their last respects to the late BJP stalwart.
The urn carrying the ashes of Vajpayee was taken in a procession from Phoolpur. State BJP chief Mahendra Nath Pandey emptied the urn carrying the ashes into the river amid chanting of vedic hymns.
The procession with the urn kept in an open vehicle was led by Pandey and joined by state minister Neel Kanth Tiwari, senior BJP leader Laxman Acharya, Mayor Mridula Jaiswal along with party local MLAsand other leaders and workers. It began from Phoolpur and crossed over 32 intersections in the city before reaching Rajendra Prasad Ghat where the ashes were immersed in the Ganga.
As the procession progressed, a large number of people thronged roads to pay their tributes to the departed leader.
