The ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee were immersed in Mandovi and Zuari rivers here as part of the BJP's "asthi kalash yatra".

The immersion of the ashes in Mandovi River was done by Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik and BJP's Goa unit chief Vinay Tendulkar while South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar did so in Zuari River.

Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar could not attend as he is in a private hospital in Mumbai for a check-up for a pancreatic ailment.

Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah had handed over urns containing Vajpayees ashes to all the BJP state unit chiefs asking them to immerse it in rivers and seas across the country.

BJP Goa general secretary Sadanand Tanavade said the urns containing the former PM's ashes were taken to 37 out of the 40 Assembly constituencies of the state.

He said that it was not taken to Benaulim, Nuvem and Madkai constituencies.
