With Japanese Encephalitis claiming lives of over 51 children in Odisha's tribal dominated Malkangiri district, Union Minister Harsh Vardhan today called upon scientists of the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) here to come up with ideas to eradicate the disease.

"The Government of India is doing research to effectively eradicate Japanese Encephalitis and it is providing more support to Odisha government in controlling the JE in endemic areas of the state," Vardhan said.

Vardhan, who is also a former Health Minister, encouraged scientists to come up with translational and applicative research ideas especially on control of cancer and infectious disease like Japanese Encephalitis, Dengue and Chikungunya which is now a threat to the mankind.

Earlier, Vardhan inaugurated the new research and development building of the ILS, which became fully functional this year with adequate infrastructure like experimental animal facility, genomics, proteomics, crystallography, cytometry and biological imaging facilities.

He termed the facilities as the best in the country in life sciences sector and exhorted scholars to work with dedication and determination to make the institute a premier one in the country.
