BJP in Delhi today urged the state Lieutenant Governor to issue a white paper on the current status of water being distributed through the Delhi Jal Board, while raising the issue of depleting water table in the city.

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan also demanded from LG Najeeb Jung that the white paper should also mention about the services of private tankers and government tankers.

"Private tankers charge Rs 1,200 for 60 litres of water, which is not worth drinking. 60 per cent people are infected with stomach diseases. Some people have to purchase bottled water.

"The tanker mafia, with the connivance of government, fill tankers with water from unauthorized borings. They earn crores of rupees every year in the summer season," Vardhan said.

He also said that due to tanker mafia, the ground water level in Delhi is falling by 10 ft every year, adding that the situation in south Delhi is very bad.

"In Madangir, Saket, Pushp Vihar areas, the ground water level has gone down to 67 meters below (the surface). According to the data of DJB, government tankers draw 100 mgd of ground water daily.

"The illegal exploitation of ground water has reached dangerous level. It may not be surprising in the next decade, if Delhi may crave for drops of water," BJP leader cautioned.
