Former Union Minister and Tamil Maanila Congress President G K Vasan today congratulated CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury on his appointment as the General Secretary of the party.
"It is a happy moment for me that Yechury gradually rose to level of General Secretary of the party at the National level. On behalf of Tamil Maanila Congress I extend my congratulations to him", Vasan said in a statement.
Yechury, who paid a short visit to Chennai recently, had a brief interaction with Vasan, leading to speculation of the formation of a new alliance in the state ahead of the assembly polls next year.
Yechury was unanimously elected to the top post at the party's 21st national congress which concluded in Visakhapatnam today.
