Founder of Dalit outfit Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan today called on DMDK founder and Opposition Leader in Tamil Nadu Assembly Vijayakant, sparking speculations of a political realignment.

However, Thirumavalavan was quick to add he met Vijayakant only to discuss about the recent violence at Marakkanam in Villupuram district, an incident which has been condemned by all political parties.

A VCK spokesperson said his party chief met Vijayakant since he was Opposition Leader and invited him for a Social harmony conference to be conducted by VCK next month.

DMK and Left parties had already been invited, he said adding, the Lok Sabha MP presented some material on the Marakkanam violence

A DMDK statement said Thirumavalavan, who was accompanied by his senior party functionaries, met Vijayakant and submitted a report on the violence.

VCK is an ally of the DMK while DMDK fought the 2011 assembly polls from the AIADMK-led alliance though the two parted ways later.

Last week, violence broke out at Marakkanam, located near Puducherry on the East Coast Road, when an unruly crowd set ablaze about six houses besides two government buses following some altercation, an incident seen as targeted at Dalits.

Political parties including DMK, DMDK, CPI-M and CPI have called for peace and stressed that such incidents, which comes months after attacks on Dalits in Dharmapuri in the state, should not recur and that government should take strong action.
