An alleged vehicle-lifter has been arrested for stealing cars on demand after tinkering with the 'Electronic Control Module', or the brain of the automobile, police said.

According to the police, inter-state auto-lifter Mehtab, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, was arrested yesterday by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. He led the cops to three stolen vehicles.

"Information was received that Mehtab would come near Max Hospital, Haiderpur, to sell a stolen vehicle... A trap was then laid and he was apprehended with a Santro car," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Ravindra Yadav.

His interrogation led police to two other cars, one Toyota Qualis and a Chevrolet Beat. He further disclosed that he used to steal the cars along with an associate, one Javed.

He told police that he used to work on a demand basis.

"The target vehicle was first chosen following which Mehtab used to break open the windowpane to unlock the vehicle. The lock system was first broken or disabled and, then, with the help of available lock-key set and ECM, he used to start the vehicle and drive away with it," Yadav added.

Further inquiries are on in the case, police said.
