Veteran farmers' association leader Sivasamy passes away

He was at the forefront of various agitations for the cause of farmers, particularly WTO and FTA

President of Tamilaga Vyavasayigal Sangham (Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association) M R Sivasamy on Sunday died at his residence, about 30 km from here, after prolonged illness, family sources said.

Sivasamy (83) was at the forefront of various agitations for the cause of farmers, particularly the World Trade Organization and the Free Trade Agreements. He was also strongly opposed to BT technology.

He is survived by his wife.

The body has been kept at his residence for the public to pay homage and the last rites will be performed on Monday evening, the sources said.
