Veteran Jamaat-i-Islami leader passes away in Pakistan

He was 85.

He was under treatment at Patel Hospital here.

Ghafoor, born in Bareli, India, was a long standing member of the Jamaat-e-Islami party and also served at its vice-chairman having joined the party in 1950 and played a leading role in the movement for democracy in the 70s.

He was also part of a committee that worked on the 1973 Constitution.

Ghafoor was one of the most outspoken politicians and religious leaders and came to Pakistan after completing his Masters in economics from Lucknow University.

He was elected into the National Assembly in 1971 and also served as as the federal minister of industry in 1978.
