"The selection committee of Bangla Academy had sent two names for the award for consideration by the state government. One of them was selected as the award is given to only one person each year," Bangla Academy secretary Shekhar Bandyopadhyay said.
In her recommendation for the award, Mahasweta had not mentioned that the awards be given jointly to two authors, he said explaining why one of the names got listed out.
After faxing her resignation to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the 86-year-old Magsaysay award winner author had said "I have never felt more insulted as a writer in my life".
Bandyopadhyay said her resignation has, however, not reached the office of the academy.
