The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau today ordered a "comprehensive probe" into alleged irregularities in the sports sector in Kerala, especially in the functioning of the State Sports Council.

The "comprehensive probe" was ordered on receipt of several complaints, including that of Olympian Anju Bobby George alleging irregularities in various areas including setting up of infrastructure, appointments and promotions in sports-related offices in the state, Vigilance sources said.

They said the probe was not limited to affairs of any particular period.

India's lone athletics World Championship medal winner, Anju Bobby George, had resigned as President of the Kerala Sports Council following differences with the new LDF government, which assumed office in May.

She had raised several allegations into the goings on in the council in the last few years.

Hurt by allegations of corruption levelled against her by state Sports Minister E P Jayarajan, the celebrated long-jumper had quit along with other council members, saying it was not proper to continue in the post after "allegations" and "misunderstandings" cropped up against her and had also demanded a probe into the council affairs in the last 10 years.
