Leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded suspension of Amravati Superintendent of Police Lakhmi Gautam here today.

Patil alleged that the Amravati SP had failed to control the situation at Mahuli Jehangir after a crowd vented its anger following the death of a 12-year-old school boy under the rear wheels of an MSRTC bus on Tuesday morning.

Patil, who visited the town, called on the bereaved family and talked to reporters at the circuit house today evening.

He said that though the SDO and tehsildar were present at the spot, orders for a lathi charge and firing were given by someone else.

He demanded suspension of the Amravati SP on this score as well as immediate withdrawal of offences registered by the police against innocent people.

He also called for a judicial probe into the incident.

It may be mentioned here that the collector has already ordered magisterial inquiry into the incident.
