Village official caught red-handed while accepting bribe

A panchayat secretary was arrested here today for allegedly accepting a bribe in exchange for issuing ration cards.

The accused secretary, Omprakash Mehta, had demanded Rs 5,000 from one Ramsevak Saharia for adding his name in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) list.

He was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe at a stamp vendor's shop in the Guna Block Development Office, Lokayukta Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Surendra Rai, Sharma told reporters.

The secretary had demanded Rs 200 each for the ration cards, which were to be issued to 25 persons, the complainant said.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Mehta with further inquiries on in the case, the DSP added.
