Villager killed, wife injured in elephant attack

A villager was killed and his wife seriously injured in an elephant attack at Bhaodi village in Jhargram sub-division of west Midnapore district today.

Forest officials said Bankim Mahato (55) was trampled to death by a wild elephant as he was watering paddy field.

Bankim's wife Sarathi Mahato, who was also present at the spot, fell before the jumbo and was pinned to ground and is being treated at Midnapore hospital in serious condition.

The pachyderm is believed to have strayed from neighbouring Dalma forest range.

With this, two villagers have been killed in elephant attack in the past four days.
 

Four days back, a woman Gangarani Mahato died after an elephant attacked her in Lodhasuli area under the same sub-division, forest officials said.
