Some residents of Dharamgarh village allegedly attacked a police team today who came to the village for detaining the sarpanch accused of siphoning off old-age pension money.

The victim, ASI Ramesh Kumar, received minor injuries and was admitted to a hospital. The accused sarpanch Devendra Singh managed to flee amidst the confusion, police said.

The incident took place when the police team led by SHO Dharambeer had gone to detain the accused sarpanch to produce him in the court with regard to the complaint, police said.

When the police tried to nab the accused his family members opposed. The issue got murkier when some other villagers sided with the family members and attacked the party, police said.

A case has been registered against five people including the sarpanch, his brothers Parvindra and Arvindra, and his son Gurpreet Singh for "obstructing government work" and "attacking police party", police said.

Police has taken Parvindra into custody.

Khand Vikas and Panchayat Adhikari Ram Datt Sharma had on April 8 complained to the police that the sarpanch allegedly withdrew Rs 3.96 lakh from the Gram Panchayat's account in the Punjab National Bank, police said.
