The leopardess, which was injured and was unable to walk, was hiding in a ruined house at the village yesterday. Soon, a large crowd gathered there and tried to shoo away the leopardess.

While the villagers were trying to scare away the leopardess to make it run to forest, it came out of the house and attacked an 85-year-old woman, who later died in a hospital, forest officials said today.

As the news of the attack on the woman spread in the village, a large number of villagers gathered and encircled the leopardess.

The villagers attacked the wild cat with iron roads as could not run away due to the injury.

A case has been registered under the wildlife act against the villagers, Pauri DFO M B Singh said.

"We will take action after completion of investigations," Singh said.
