Demanding a ban on sale of liquor ban, people in a number of villages in Rajasthan today staged protests, blocked roads and locked wine shops.

The protestors, mostly women, locked the liquor shops, blocked traffic and raised slogans at villages in Jamvaramgarh in Jaipur district, Dungarpur, Ratangarh and Barmer districts in support of their demand, officials said.

However, Rajasthan Excise Department officials said they do not have the details of the villages that have staged protest.

"We do not have list of such villages or areas where people are protesting for shutdown of liquor shops," State Excise Commissioner, O P Yadav said.

In Rajasthan, a number of villages are demanding a ban on sale of liquor while several villages have expressed their desire in favour of closure of wine shops in their neighbourhood, officials said.

Last month, five villages of Rozda panchayat of Amber tehsil had held voting to shut liquor shops in their area.

Meanwhile, apart from ban on sale of liquor, demand is also being made to close the illegal slaughter houses in the state.
