The police today detained around 40 men and women from village Kannepalli in Aheri taluka of the district who had sat on an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Tehsildar's office at Aheri.

They were released later in the evening, officials said.

The agitators, mostly tribals, are demanding closure of a fair price shop at the village, accusing that the owner has committed a fraud. Gram Sabha of the village had passed a resolution seeking closure of the shop on January 26.
