Around 800 residents of villages around Qazigund in south Kashmir Anantnag district, 85 kms from here, blocked the tracks as the Railway authorities were preparing the train for a trial run to Banihal, official sources said.
The villagers are demanding a one-minute halting station for the train at Hillad village and want an assurance from the railway authorities to this effect, they said.
The Northern Railways was scheduled to conduct the trial run of the train between Qazigund and Banihal this afternoon but it could not be performed so far due to the protests by villagers.
While the Baramulla-Srinagar-Qazigund link is functional for the past four years, this would be the first time that the trains will cross the mighty Pir Panjal Mountain range.
The highlight of the Qazigund-Banihal link is the 11.21 km tunnel
