Violence broke out at Lamka Town, the headquarters of Churachandpur district in Manipur today evening after an angry tribal mob tried to storm the residence of former minister Phungzathang Tonsing.

"The police had to fire tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the mob," SP of Churachandpur Rakesh Balwal told PTI.

Tension had been brewing up in Lamka Town after two individuals - Thangsuanlal and Thangkhanlun were severely assaulted earlier.

A 12-hour total shutdown was imposed by Young Paite Association (YPA) in the district capital yesterday from 5 am as a result.

"The situation is under control now and security personnel have been deployed in large numbers as a preventive measure," he said adding that there were no casualties.

Phungzathang, a veteran former Congress minister, had resigned from the party ahead of the Manipur polls.

He contested the recently held Manipur Legislative Assembly elections (first phase) on March 4, on a National Peoples' Party (NPP) ticket.
