This was his maiden meeting with Gandhi after he took oath on December 25 as chief minister for the sixth time. 78-year-old Singh was Chief Minister between 1983 and 85; 1985 and 1990; 1993 and 1998 and 2003 and 2007.
Led by Singh in the state, Congress secured a wafer-thin majority of 36 in a House of 68, one more than the half-way mark of 35.
Earlier in the day, Singh was also present at the Foundation Day of the party at the AICC headquarters, which was sans any pomp and show with Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing their anguish over the South Delhi gangrape incident.
At the Foundation Day programme, which saw the presence of almost all senior party leaders and Union Ministers, Union Minister Anand Sharma exchanged pleasantries with Virbhadra Singh.
Sharma, a known detractor of Singh, walked up to the Chief Minister and congratulated him on the victory. Both were seen holding each other's hand for a long time.
