CPI(M) today alleged that Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is "ruining" Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in a "systematic manner" by "stifling" the academia and "promoting illegal appointment" of teachers.

"Those who cannot even qualify for appointment in school cadres happen to be teaching in HPU. The Chief Minister's vision trajectory towards higher education and all the three universities is of complete plunder, ruin and deceit," CPI(M) State Secretariat member Tikender Panwar alleged.

The democratic voice of the university community is being "scuttled" and the HPU, the only general university of the state, has been "completely weakened" by not providing adequate budget and passing the buck onto the students by raising fees in an unprecedented manner, he said.

The CPI(M) State Secretariat accused Singh of "eroding the autonomy" of HPU which led to "systematic intervention" of government in appointments and nominations in the highest decision making body including the Executive Council.

It also claimed that elections to student's union had been banned several times, always by the present Chief Minister with the intention thatno dissenting voice of the students can be raised.
