Visakhapatnam, Apr 29 (PTI) Six militia members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) Korukonda area committee surrendered before the police in Visakhapatnam today.

Six militia members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) Korukonda area committee surrendered before the police in Visakhapatnam today.

A commander, village committee member and militia members from Chintapalle area were among those who surrendered before the police, Superintendent of Police G Srinivas said adding, the militia members stated that they were disillusioned continuing as Maoists, which led them to give up arms.

The surrendered members include militia commander K Chittibabu, village committee member V Ramakrishna, V Pinnayya Dora, V Chittibabu, V Rajarao and L Somana Dora, all residents of Godugumamidi village under Balapam panchayat of Chintapalle mandal in the Visakhapatnam agency, he said.
 

He also said, these surrenders indicate that the Maoists are losing their grip over their strongholds near Visakhapatnam due to the 'Sadbhavana Yatra', a rural police campaign appealing Maoists to surrender.

Narsipatnam's Officer on Special Duty (Operations) A R Damodhar added, the police will continue with the Yatra to get more militia members to surrender.
