Visvesvaraya Technology University VC suspended over graft

The Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University, who was under a cloud over allegations of irregularities, has been placed under suspension by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala.

The action against H Maheshappa came after his reply was sought on the findings of a one-man committee headed by former High Court judge Keshavanarayana which looked into the allegations.

Maheshappa faced charges ranging from alleged irregularities in awarding tender for construction works to appointment of 168 teaching staff in violation of government orders.

A Raj Bhavan communique said Maheshappa has been suspended with immediate effect and till further orders by the Governor, the Chancellor of Belagavi-based VTU, which has 202 affiliated engineering colleges under its jurisdiction.
 

It said H G Shekarappa, Registrar (Evaluation), VTU, has been nominated to carry on the duties of the office of the Vice-Chancellor till further orders.

Based on the conclusions of the facts finding committee constituted by him, the Governor had issued a notice to Maheshappa on January 29.
