The death toll in August 23 fire at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd's (HPCL) refinery here rose to 23 with four more workers succumbing to their injuries today.

While three succumbed to their burn injuries in the hospital here, another one died at a hospital in Mumbai today, HPCL sources said.

The four deceased were identified as K Tata Rao (60), M V Ramana (45), Sambhu Manna (55) and Subhash Majhi (25), they said.

A massive blaze had broken out on august 23 evening at the sprawling complex when staffers from private companies were at work.

"Out of the 23 persons killed in the mishap so far, only Ch Murali, in-charge of the cooling tower, was an employee of the HPCL. All other victims were private workers engaged by contract companies," the company official said.

13 patients are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the city, while eight injured workers, who had been flown to Mumbai, were responding well to the treatment.
