Touted as India's biggest event for grassroot athletes with more than 3000 participating, the National Inter-District Athletics Meet (NID-JAM) will be held here from September 5 to 7.
"The Andhra Pradesh government has come forward to support the initiative which is expected to attract around 3,600 athletes including the officials from 300 districts of the country," state HRD minister Ganta Srinivas Rao said here.
He said the NID-JAM will be conducted for both boys and girls in age groups of Under-16 and Under-14.
The top talent emerging from the championship will be considered by the AFI (Athletics Federation of India) for selection for the national youth athletics camp from where the athletes are selected for future IAAF World Youth Championship, Asian Youth Championship and Commonwealth Youth Games.
Rao said the championship will have 30 events in both track and field action in both age categories.
State Medical and Health Minister Kamineni Srinivsa Rao said the government was encouraging sports in a big way and has decided to construct sport complexes in every mandal headquarters.
