Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) that had two months ago banned the use of plastic bags in the city, has now allowed the use of plastic bags above 40 microns.

The civic body had issued a notification on May 10 banning the use of plastic carry bags. It has now issued a fresh notification on July 6, citing that plastic bags below 40 microns, which are difficult to recycle, have been banned in the city.

"The previous notification required some corrections. So, VMC has issued another a fresh notification banning plastic bags below 40 microns. Restrictions on its use will be with retrospective effect from May 1," VMC Commissioner Vinod Rao told PTI.

Plastic waste cause clogging of drains, which leads to flooding of streets during monsoon. Also, the practice of burning plastic poses serious health problems, he said.

"The restrictions have been imposed taking into consideration health hazards and also to preserve beauty of the city," Rao added.

The civic body has been collecting nearly 70 tonnes of plastic waste every day.

With the ban, Rao said, the corporation intends to create awareness among public and inform them about stringent action taken on flouting norms.
