The walk, organised by HelpAge India to highlight the importance of inter-generational bonding, started from Old Age Home, Sector 15 up to the Rose Garden.

Children from different schools along with their grandparents, senior citizens, volunteers from Punjab University Social Work Department and Youth Innovative Society also participated in the event.

A recent study by HelpAge India brought out the startling fact that the highest abusers of the elderly in India were their own kin, a spokesman said.

Half of the elderly reported facing abuse because of lack of emotional support.

The disintegration of the joint family system, migration and urbanisation in India is posing a challenge on the care of the elderly and further widening the gap between the young and old.
