A South Korean national's wallet, containing foreign currency with face value of Rs 5.70 lakh was allegedly snatched away by an unidentified man near the CST railway station in south Mumbai, police said today.
According to police, the incident took place yesterday afternoon when the victim, 58-year-old Chang hun Ho was walking towards the station on a footpath on D N Road taking pictures of the historical monuments with his camera.
"The accused, who must have been following the victim, took away the wallet from Chang's trouser around 3.30 pm yesterday and by the time the victim realised, he saw the man (accused) running away," Deputy Police Commissioner Ravindra Shisve told PTI.
Chang lost 4,500 US dollars and 5,400 South Korean won collectively valued at Rs 5.70 lakh, apart from his credit card and an identity card, Shisve added.
The victim was neither threatened nor hurt, the DCP said adding that, "We are working out to track down the accused, who was suspected to have had two accomplices."
DCP Shisve said the tourist had come to Mumbai for a day or two and was clicking the pictures in the area while walking, when the accused struck him.
After the incident, the tourist, who was alone, went to his parked vehicle and approached police, following which an FIR was registered at the Azad Maidan police station.
Chang left the city yesterday, police said, adding that there was no CCTV to capture the incident.
