An alleged key operative of banned Indian Mujahideen(IM), who is a cousin of the Bhatkal brothers and wanted for several blasts in India, has been apprehended by authorities in Abu Dhabi and produced before a local magistrate.

The court production of Abdul Wahid Siddibapa, against whom an Interpol Red Corner Notice is pending, has dashed hopes of a quick deportation with a lengthy extradition process being the only option for India to bring him back.

32-year-old Wahid was detained in the UAE last month but the information was not shared immediately with CBI, the nodal agency representing India at the Interpol.

The authorities in Abu Dhabi, after failing to receive any formal information through the Interpol, presented Wahid before a magistrate pending enquiry. He is now under the cutody of the UAE authoritie

Wahid is a cousin of Yasin Bhatkal who was arrested by sleuths when he was crossing over to India from Nepal last year.

During his interrogation by central security agencies, Yasin had highlighted about the role of Wahid in multiple blasts in the country.

Wahid, wanted for his alleged role in arranging cadre and being a financial brain of the banned terror group, was detained while he was on his way to Abu Dhabi from Dubai for some work.

He was picked up by the local Interpol sleuths immediately after he entered into Abu Dhabi.

The presenting of Wahid before a magistrate was seen as a setback to the efforts by National Investigation Agency (NIA), which was roped in by RAW, the external intelligence agency, to secure his deportation.

However, the NIA apparently chose to act suo motu and did not inform the CBI leading to a delay in initiating the process for seeking Wahid's deportation.

Now, an extradition notice will have to be sent to the authorities which will be lengthy and time consuming. In the past, no extradition case has been won by India in a gulf country.

Wahid, who hails from coastal town of Bhatkal in Karnataka, has an Interpol red corner notice issued against him and is wanted for number of attacks including Mumbai serial blasts in 2006, Delhi serial blasts in 2008 and 2010 Chinnaswamy Stadium blasts in Bangalore.

He is accused of money laundering to facilitate bomb blasts in the country using financial agencies and banks.

Yasin was arrested in August last year from the Indo-Nepal border while his cousin Riyaz is understood to be hiding in Pakistan.
