A notorious gangster carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 was shot dead in an alleged encounter with sleuths of Special Task Force on the premises of a government hospital in Kabir Chaura math here, police said today.
Rohit alias Sunny Singh had assembled with other gang members in the compound of government hospital last night when he was shot dead last night in an exchange of fire between Varanasi field unit cops of STF and his gang members, said Inspector General of police (Varanasi Zone), Amrendra Sengar.
STF constable Alok was injured in the firing and he has been rushed to the hospital, Semgar said.

Two pistols and a motorbike have been recovered from their possession, said police.
Sunny's name had recently figured in a murder case last week and he was also suspected to be involved in robbery case in which Rs 27 lakh were looted in Jagatganj area here, police said.
