Wanted red sandalwood smuggler Parthipan held in Chennai

Suspected international red sanders smuggler Kandaswamy Parthipan was arrested along with three others by Andhra Pradesh Police from his Chennai hideout, a senior officer said today.

"Kadapa Police yesterday conducted raids in Red Hills area in Chennai and caught Kandaswamy Parthipan and three other smugglers hailing from Tamil Nadu," said district Superintendent of Police Ramakrishna.

Police seized one vehicle, 21 red sander logs weighing 638 kg and cash worth Rs 20,000 during the raid.

"Parthipan is a close associate of Dubai-based smuggler Sahul Hameed and Kollam Gangi Reddy of Kadapa and has links with many international and inter-state smugglers," he said.
 

The SP said Parthipan has collectively smuggled 1,000 tonne of red sanders so far and earned more than Rs 100 crore through the illegal trade. He is wanted in 46 cases in Kadapa and Chittoor districts.

Other accused arrested along with Parthipan are Thangaraju Ashok kumar Raju (33), Andy Raman (59) and Ramaswamy Murugesan (50) who all hail from Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu.
