The Jammu and Kashmir Congress unit today said a "warlike situation" was prevailing along the

International Border and Line of Control in the state as heavy shelling and firing from across the border claimed 12 lives so far.

It sought a "befitting response" to Pakistan for resorting to mischief and misadventure during Ramzan", when the Centre had announced halting of all operations in view of the sanctity of the holy fasting month.

In a major decision recently, the Centre had asked the security forces not to launch operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan.

Heavy shelling and firing from across the border since May 15 has resulted in the death of 12 persons, including two BSF jawans. Many others were injured and scores of border dwellers had to flee their homes.

A warlike situation prevails along the IB and LoC due to intense shelling by Pakistan during the past couple of days. The Centre and state government has utterly failed to deal with the grim situation, especially ensure adequate safety, security and required relief measures for the affected population, Vice president of Pradesh Congress Committee and former minister, Raman Bhalla told reporters here.

Bhalla, flanked by party spokesperson Ravinder Sharma and former minister S Manjit Singh, said thousands of people had to run for safety in the absence of any standby provision by the government for their relocation.

The state government is totally unconcerned and inept to deal with the situation and provide any sort of help or take measures required in this level of situation when Pakistan is aggressively attacking large number of Indian posts and targeting civilian population, he said.

The Congress leader said the record number of ceasefire violations and casualties during the past four years was a matter of great concern, and reflects the failure of the central government to effectively deal with Pakistan in all fronts.
