A government funded quango advised Britons to cut back on laundary as they believe doing so will reduce carbon emissions and save water.
The Waste and Resources Action Programme says if people reduced the number of times they filled the washing machines by a tenth they would.
The programme also claims that Britons would also spend 10 pounds less a year doing laundry, the 'Daily Mail' reported.
The programme researchers found four out of ten people would "seriously consider" wearing more of their clothes a second time before washing.
However, nearly half of people said they would do so only if they "smelt fresher longer".
The TaxPayers' Alliance accused the NGO, which received 79 million pounds in public funds last year, of interfering in people's lives.
"It is not the job of government to tell us how often we wash our delicates. This interfering quango should butt out of our laundry. There are much more pressing priorities to focus on," Alliance spokesman Robert Oxley said.
However, UK Environment Minister Lord Taylor backed the report, saying "Making better use of our resources is integral to cutting carbon emissions and building a sustainable green economy."
