Former Pakistan Test captain Wasim Bari has been appointed as the new manager of the national team for the coming 'home' series against the West Indies in the UAE.

"Wasim Bari has been appointed as manager for the West Indies series since Intikhab Alam's contract expires on September 30. The board is grateful to Mr Alam for his excellent role as manager and ambassador of Pakistan cricket," the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement.

A source in the PCB said that Bari wanted a long-term contract but the board asked him prove himself during the West Indies series before a decision is taken on giving a longer run to him as a manager.

Intikhab first became the manager of the Pakistan team on the tour to England in 1982, he then held all top positions in Pakistan cricket including that of head coach, chief selector and Director national academy.

The source said that members of the governing body had decided that the tour to England would be Intikhab's last assignment as he had become soft with the players with his advancing age.

"The members want someone who can understand and deal with the players as required according to the requirements," he said.

68-year-old Bari, who played 81 Tests and 51 ODIs, has also served as chief selector and chief operating officer in the board.

Bari said his new assignment would be a big challenge but he had accepted it as Pakistan cricket is going through exciting times with new talents coming in.

"I would be happy to be part of this rebuilding process when young players establish themselves at the top level."

Bari said his main task was to ensure that the players were disciplined and adhere to the given code of conduct to them.
