In the wake of the water crisis in Delhi due to the Jat stir, the city government has directed officials to prepare a backup plan for alternative sources of water so that residents don't face such a problem in future.
According to the government, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been asked to prepare a plan so that the city has 7-10 days water backup to cope with crisis.
During their agitation for quota, people from Jat community allegedly damaged Munak canal which is the main source of water for the national capital.
Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra today tweeted that he has asked DJB to prepare a backup plan in case the city faced such a crisis in the future.
"I have asked my team in DJB to prepare a backup plan in case city face such a crisis again in future. City shd have a 7-10 days backup.
"DJB team will hv to identify and prepare plan for alternative sources of water, possible natural reservoirs, interlinking of plants etc(sic)," Mishra said in a series of his tweets.
He further said, "They have to make a presentation within 7-10 days. I don't want my city to face such a crisis ever again.
Meanwhile, the DJB has released Rs 1 crore to the Haryana
Government for restoration of damaged portion of the Munak Canal on an emergency basis.
In addition, two heavy earth movers have been provided to Haryana Irrigation Department (HID) on February 24. Senior officials of DJB are monitoring the work.
A senior official said the damage to the Carrier Lined Channel (CLC) near Mundela village (Haryana) by the agitators has led to the water crisis in Delhi.
The work on restoration of this canal has been taken up and it is likely to be completed within the next 15 days.
To cope with water crisis, the government has made a plan to supply water in affected areas.
"Since Dwarka Water Treatment Plan of 40 MGD capacity has been shut down due to non-availability of water in CLC, around 10 MGD of filtered water has been diverted from the Nangloi WTP. The water to Dwarka Sub City and adjoining unauthorised colonies is being supplied from command tank 2 & 4," an official said.
The production at all WTPs except Dwarka has been maximized and total production has gone up to 830 MGD which is likely to be further augmented upto 840 MGD, the official said, adding that water tankers have been diverted from Central North Delhi and East Delhi towards South West District to supplement drinking water.
