: A sudden gush of water in a pipeline from Porthi dam to the sixth unit of Kunda Hydel power project near here led to stoppage of power generation since last night, official sources said.

They said a block in the pipeline resulted in a manhole blowing off and water rushing to a lower level, where the power house is situated.

Water entered the rooms of the three-storeyed powerhouse, where rotors, circuit breakers and PCBs were kept, following which generation was stopped since last night.

The unit generates 30 MW and is the main source of electricity for Nilgiris district.

Efforts to pump out the water started this morning and is likely to to go till late in the night, after which power generation is expected to resume, the sources said.
