Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Services Board (CMWSSB) was recently awarded the Water Leaders Award 2015 at Greece, Tamil Nadu government said today.
The award was given to CMWSSB for effective distribution of drinking water in developing countries in the year 2013-14, a state government release here said.
The award was presented by the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, also former Prime Minister of Portugal, it added.

In 2013-14, for the second consecutive year, Chennai had received lower rainfall, resulting is low storage levels in reservoirs, it said adding that the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had taken steps to address the shortage.
These included launching the 100 mld seawater desalination plant at Minjur near here, digging new wells for water supply and strengthening the implementation of rainwater harvesting, it said, adding these had helped tide over the water shortage.
