Water level in Yamuna above danger mark

The water level in the Yamuna river continued to rise and stayed over the danger mark for the second consecutive day.

The river was flowing at 205.79 metres at Old Railway Bridge on Wednesday evening, above the danger mark of 204.83 metres.

An official said that due to rise in water level of Yamuna, 598 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas.

Also, 1,391 tents have so far been erected in six districts of the city, where 98 people are staying.

The water level is expected to further increase and an alert has been sounded by the authorities, the official said, adding that at 5 pm, around 26,796 cusecs of water was discharged from Hathani Kund Barrage.

 

Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash yesterday reviewed the flood situation in the Yamuna floodplains and ordered erection of tents and distribution of food among the affected.

Yamuna river on Tuesday crossed the danger mark and was flowing at 205.24 metres.

In the month of July too, the water level had crossed the danger mark , prompting authorities to issue orders for closure of Old Yamuna Bridge, colloquially known as 'Lohe Ka Pul'.

The highest water level recorded at Old Yamuna Bridge was 207.49 metres in 1978. It touched 207.11 metres in 2010 and 207.32 metres in 2013, according to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority.
