The West Bengal government has achieved the target of bringing 16 lakhs girls under the Kanyashree project for the uplift of the girl child.

"With the induction of 3.75 lakhs girls under Kanyashree 1 and 2, we have achieved the target of bringing 16 lakhs girls under the Kanyashree project," Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here during 'Kanyashree Diwas'.

"This project will be followed by the entire country and the world as it aims at development and progress of the girl child," she said.

A pet project of the Trinamool Congress government, the Kanyashree project was also aimed at bringing down the number of girls dropping out of school.

There would be 30 per cent reservation for Kanyashree card holders in all ITIs across the state, where vocational training was provided, the chief minister said.

At the state-level celebrations at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, Banerjee ceremonially transferred the Kanyashree grants to the bank accounts of almost four lakh girl students around the state.
