"It's right. Thats why I agreed to it," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here in reply to a question.

Narayanan had said yesterday that he did not think that the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, required Presidential approval and that there was legal advise also.

"If the high court felt otherwise, it is fine. What can we do," he had said.

Asked to comment on the governor's statement, Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee told reporters, "I strongly believe that no sensible man can say this."

Leader of the Opposition Suryakanta Mishra belonging to the CPI-M said, "the Governor is a wise man and has disclosed in the open that the government had advised him the Singur legislation will not require Presidential assent."

In a setback to the Mamata Banerjee government, the high court had ruled on June 23 that the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, introduced by the government to recover land leased to Tata Motors in Singur for its small car project was constitutionally invalid and void.
