West Bengal Government has suggested the State Election Commissioner to hold crucial elections to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on April 18 and to 93 municipalities across the state on April 25.

Election to KMC and the 93 other civic bodies are being considered the biggest polls before the Assembly elections in 2016.

State Election Commissioner Sushanta Ranjan Upadhaya told PTI today "The SEC today wrote a letter to the state government to think of a revised date for the KMC polls, if necessary because of the Joint Entrance Examination scheduled on that date".

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board, which conducts the examination for the undergraduate level engineering and medical courses had earlier written to the SEC in this regard, he said.

The SEC, however, has no reservation on holding of polls on April 25 to 93 municipalities as suggested by the state government.

"Since we have not commented on that (holding polls on April 25) so it is obvious that there is no difficulty (on the part of SEC)", he said regarding the proposed date of April 25 for election to 93 municipalities.

Reacting to it, the state Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Firhad Hakim said that the state government would take a decision after receipt of the letter from SEC.

In a major boost for Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, which is facing the heat of Saradha scam, swept crucial Bongoan Lok Sabha and Krishnagunj assembly bypoll yesterday reasserting its political supremacy in West Bengal where BJP is trying to make inroads.
