"Allowances given to political sufferers will be discontinued from now. We don't like to carry on pension meant for party cadres," state's Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee said here today.

The decision, taken at the state cabinet meeting on Saturday last, also said that allowances given to freedom fighters, however, would continue and be enhanced by Rs 250 per month.

The list of freedom fighters would be studied diligently so that they were able to get allowances at higher rates, he said.

Subsequently, the state government was thinking about extending pensions to distressed journalists, sportspersons, artists and writers, Chatterjee said.
