West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today praised Jadavpur University (JU) authorities for organising its 60th annual convocation this year well as the last one was marred with protests.

"Forget what happened last year. This year's convocation has been very well organised. I congratulate the staff, Vice-Chancellor, faculty and students," Tripathi who also the Chancellor of state universities said.

Asked as to what made the difference this year, he said, "You feel it, you know it and I also know it".

Last year, JU students were demanding removal of the then Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti while Geetoshree Sarkar, a gold medalist and recipient of best student award from the Bengali department, had refused to accept her medal and certificate at the convocation.

"Let bygones be bygones. I don't look back as to what happened last year," Jadavpur University's present VC Suranjan Das said.

He highlighted the importance of independence of universities saying autonomy should be there as per the law and social responsibilities.

Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of India, was the chief guest at the convocation.
