Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Abdul Mannan today alleged that Advocate- General Jayanta Mitra was "forced to resign" for standing up against "illegal and unconstitutional" ways of the state government and demanded a statement from the Mamata Banerjee dispensation.

"We feel the state government should offer a proper clarification as to why all of a sudden the Advocate-General of the state had to resign. The Assembly is in session, so we demand a statement from a minister on the floor of the Assembly," Mannan told reporters.

Earlier in the day, Mitra resigned citing "difference of opinion" with the state government.

Mannan alleged that Mitra was forced to resign as he didn't want to be a party to the "illegal and unconstitutional" steps the state was taking.

"In various cases, the state government was forcing him to plead in favour of illegal and unconstitutional issues, that is why he has resigned," Mannan claimed.
