The West Bengal government has sought 40 per cent grant for Turga pumped storage hydel power project at Purulia under clean energy fund.

"We have sought 40 per cent of the cost from clean energy fund. It will be as grant," West Bengal Minister for Power Manish Gupta told PTI.

"West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has already written to the Power Ministry for the grant approval for Turga project, it being innovative and promoting clean energy mission," he said.

After Power Ministry, the proposal has to be approved by Finance Ministry for disbursal, he added.

Pumped storage plants, the minister said, have been recognised as innovative.

West Bengal State Electricity Corporation already operates one pump storage hydel project in Purulia.

Additionally, West Bengal is seeking a green energy fund to build two pump storage hydel power plants in Purulia-Turga (1,000 MW) and Bandhu (900 MW).

The state is also planning to set up a 1,200-MW solar power plant to support these two hydel power plants.

The combined project cost is Rs 17,000 crore, Gupta said.
