The West Bengal Human Rights Commission today asked the state government to pay Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of SFI leader Sudipta Gupta who died in police custody a few months ago.

"The Commission, after analysing the matter, also said the incident could have been averted if police had been more alert and acted in a more professional manner," Secretary, West Bengal Human Rights Commission, Sujay Kumar Haldar said.

Gupta, an SFI activist, died on April 2 after he allegedly fell off a bus which was transporting him, along with other SFI leaders to Alipore jail for violation of law and order, while in the custody of the police.
