WBHRC chairman takes suo moto cognisance of student's death

West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman Ashok Kumar Ganguly today took suo motu cognisance of the death of a student after being beaten up by his teacher in school.

Ganguly directed South 24 Parganas district superintendent of police Praveen Triparthy to file a complete report on the incident in three weeks time.

Bapi Joardar, a class III student of Nirdeshkhali Shisu Sikha Kendra in Basanti area of the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas, fell ill on May 17 and died in a government hospital in Kolkata the next day after being physically punished by his teacher.

Champa Rani Mondal, a teacher of the school had banged the nine-year-old boy's head against the wall for his alleged lapses in class.
 

Mondal is in jail custody for 14 days since May 18.
