Officials said the Ministry had already written a letter to all the state governments in this regard.

In its letter, the Ministry has said that its flagship Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme was launched on October 2, 1975 under the leadership of late Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister, on an experimental basis in 33 projects.

The scheme was later taken to all parts of the country, it said.

"As we all know 31st October is a day on which Smt Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, fell victim to the mindless act of violence in 1984. It will be befitting to pay a rich tribute to late Prime Minister on 31st October at each anganwadi centre by remembering her contribution to the cause of development of women and children," the Ministry's letter to the states says.

The Ministry also desired that the day may be marked by organising events and activities for children, pregnant and lactating mothers with a view to create awareness regarding the services under the ICDS.

"The day may be observed by spreading our resolve of a violence-free environment which is imperative for health growth and development of children," the Ministry has said in its letter to the states.
